It was a time of change because European regulations in this area were beginning to advance and Spain’s entry into the EU would require its implementation. We realized that there was a lack of technical knowledge and clear methodologies to address these issues, especially in high-risk sectors such as chemicals or energy. We saw an opportunity to create a consultancy that would offer specialized solutions and help companies comply with regulations and improve their safety.

How did TEMA help to create what we know today as “security culture”?

We introduced changes in the way we see and think about safety management and its importance. Nobody wants accidents to happen and the first step to avoid them is to know the existing risks, which in our jargon is called “risk identification”. Once evaluated, it is usually necessary to make modifications in the process conditions, in the installations themselves, in the automatic systems, instrumentation, in the way people work, etc. This is called “prevention”, which is one of the main lines of work in safety that we promote.

The second line is emergency action, because, even if you make a correct prevention, accidents can happen and at this point you have to know what you have to do to minimize the damage they can cause.

What were the greatest challenges in those early years?

To explain the concepts I have just mentioned. We devoted a lot of effort and time to disseminating this knowledge and these ways of doing things, since they represented a transcendental cultural change. Fortunately, we confirmed the response we expected from the industry: extremely positive.

What do you consider to have been the most important milestones in the evolution of TEMA?

There are several key moments. The first was the industry response mentioned above. Another was when we started working on international projects, which allowed us to apply our knowledge in different environments and regulations, which is a very prominent feature of our company. We have a high capacity for adaptation and global and local knowledge to address each case. Another important milestone was when we incorporated the environmental vector, which at that time was a great unknown, to our services and we were, once again, a pioneering company in this area, carrying out the first environmental audits that were done in the country. The fourth was the creation of Litoclean, under the direction of Begoña Mundó, which allowed us to specialize in the soil and groundwater sector when it was still emerging.

How has industrial and environmental safety changed over the past 40 years?

It has changed enormously. When we started, despite existing initiatives, safety was perceived more as an obligation than as a strategic value. Today, companies are aware of the transcendence of safety and environmental impact, and they are addressing it as a strategic pillar. In addition, technologies have advanced enormously, allowing us to make more precise analyses and propose more effective solutions.

How do you see Tema in the coming years and what legacy would you like to leave in the company?

Our goal is to continue growing and innovating. Innovation is in our DNA, we have always been at the forefront of the sector, responding to needs that were yet to be created and it has been a key aspect in our trajectory. We have always worked to have the best tools available, the most innovative, the most cutting-edge, but our best tool is our people, our talent.

We want to strengthen our international presence; we are already in 42 countries, but we have 164 more to explore. We will also continue to develop new solutions based on digitalization and artificial intelligence and to reinforce our commitment to sustainability, helping companies to implement more responsible and efficient strategies. We believe that the future of industrial and environmental safety lies in a comprehensive approach, where technology, knowledge and sustainability go hand in hand.

As part of TEMA’s 40th anniversary, we talked to Albert Tasias, president and founder of the company, about the company’s beginnings, its evolution and future challenges.
